Dr Steven Choo serves as the Chairman of VestAsia Group Pte Ltd., bringing with him a wealth of experience spanning over 45 years. His expertise encompasses research, consultancy, valuation, property management, leasing, development planning, and investment appraisal in both the private and public sectors.
As a seasoned professional and recognised figure in the media, Dr Choo immerses himself in every endeavour he undertakes, always committing to provide insightful and strategic guidance to others.
Notably, as consultant to Surbana International in strategic city management, Dr Choo conceptualised and served on the Steering Committee for the development of the iconic Saadiyat Island, a 2,700-hectare world-class leisure, residential, business and cultural hub in Abu Dhabi. Dr Choo also served on the inaugural International Resource Advisory Panel for the planning and development of one‐north in Buona Vista, and was Deputy Chairman of the Land Working Group of the Economic Review Committee which sanctioned the creation of Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) and the Business and Financial Centre (BFC) at Marina Bay in Singapore.
Dr Choo was the first CEO of Real Estate Developers’ Association of Singapore (REDAS) and had served on the Valuation Review Board of the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, boards of JTC Corporation, Singapore Land Authority, private and listed companies in real estate development, investment and business trusts in Malaysia and Singapore. He is at present an Independent Director on the boards of a SGX‐listed property developer in China and a S-REIT manager active in the US market.
Dr Choo was formerly the Malaysian country head of the CapitaLand Group and its Senior Vice President, covering various portfolios in research, direct investment, and corporate development as well as the establishment of the first two REITs sponsored by the Group.
Prior to CapitaLand, Dr Choo made significant contributions as the National Director and Head of Research and Consultancy, Jones Lang LaSalle Singapore, JLL’s Asia Pacific Regional Head of Research and consultant to numerous global investment and sovereign wealth funds such as ING Real Estate, GIC, and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. Before JLL, Dr Choo was with Richard Ellis International Property Consultants and the School of Building & Estate Management, National University of Singapore, where he held several senior positions.
Dr Choo was Head, (Tenancy) Lands and Estate, Ministry of Defence, before joining the University. His continual dedication to education and professional development is evident through his current appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Real Estate, NUS Business School, and his previous role as trainer for private bankers in real estate and REITs at the Wealth Management Institute.
A Commonwealth Scholar, Dr Choo obtained an M. Phil in Environmental Planning from the University of Nottingham (1979) after graduating from the University of Singapore in Estate Management (1974). Dr Choo also holds a Ph.D. in Urban Planning from the University of Washington with a Certificate of Achievement in Urban Design (1988). He is a fellow of the Singapore Institute of Surveyors and Valuers and an affiliate member of the Singapore Institute of Planners.
